A date has been set in the trial of a man whose dogs authorities say mauled a 10-year-old boy to death.

Bentley Collins, 53 will be tried June 16 on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of 10-year-old Matthew Davis, said 4th Circuit Deputy Solicitor Kernard Redmond, who is prosecuting the case.

Dillon County sheriff’s investigators said Matthew Davis was found dead Nov. 3, 2006, after six dogs attacked him at Collins’ residence in the Emanuelville community in Dillon County.

Jury selection for the trial was scheduled for Feb. 11, but was postponed until Feb. 25 because of Manning’s health issues, then postponed again because Collins’ attorney asked to be removed from the case.

Collins surrendered to Dillon County sheriff’s deputies two days after they obtained warrants for his arrest on charges of involuntary manslaughter and keeping unconfined, dangerous animals at his home.

The day of Collins’ arrest, five of his dogs were euthanized. The sixth dog was stolen from the county pound.
