FLORENCE — In a series as evenly matched as the one between Chesterfield and Lake View’s softball teams, sometimes it comes down to the little things.

In a game that went to international tiebreaker rules (each team starts the inning with a runner on second), Emily Smith’s one-out grounder to the first baseman was just slow enough to score Lacy Rhynes from third in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chesterfield a 3-2 win and the Class A state championship.
HOUSTON — Despite having a base runner in every inning, Francis Marion University could not manage the big hit needed to drive in a run as the Patriots fell to sixth-ranked Emporia State University 1-0, on Friday in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II Women’s Softball National Finals.
FMU ends its season with a 39-16 record, the third-highest win total in school history, and by making the program’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The game was also the first-ever televised game played a Patriot softball team.
Friday’s North Carolina Lottery Education 200 is a hometown race for all but one fulltime NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team.
The RedWolves have increased attendance in each of the last seven seasons, but they’re not standing pat for 2008. The team has totally revamped their home Legion Field to help better enhance the fan experience.
